Elevate your flying skills with our Aerobatics Foundation Course, designed for pilots seeking to achieve precision, control, and confidence in dynamic flight. This comprehensive course offers structured, hands-on training in advanced maneuvers, focusing on safety, technical skill, and situational awareness in aerobatic environments.

FCL.800 states holders of a pilot licence for aeroplanes, TMG or sailplanes shall only undertake aerobatic flights when they hold an aerobatic rating.

Applicants for an aerobatic rating shall have completed at least 30 hours of flight time or, in the case of sailplanes, 120 launches as PIC in the appropriate aircraft category, completed after the issue of the licence.

The course includes 5 hours of aerobatic instruction, along with theoretical knowledge appropriate to achieve the rating (Approx. 8 hours).

There is no flight test to complete, but the applicant is expected to achieve a safe and competent standard. This will allow basic sequences of the taught manoeuvres to be flown.

Course Content

Theoretical Knowledge

1.) Human Factors and Body Limitations:

  • Spatial disorientation

  • Airsickness

  • Body stress and G-forces, positive and negative

  • Effects of grey and blackouts

2.) Technical Subjects:

  • Legislation affecting aerobatic flying to include environmental and noise subjects

  • Principles of aerodynamics to include slow flight, stalls and spins, flat and inverted

  • General airframe and engine limitations

3.) Limitations applicable to the specific aircraft category (and type):

  • Airspeed limitations

  • Symmetric load factors

  • Rolling Gs (type-related, as applicable

4.) Aerobatic manoeuvres and recovery:

  • Entry parameters

  • Planning systems and sequencing of manoeuvres

  • Rolling manoeuvres

  • Looping manoeuvres

  • Combination manoeuvres

  • Entry and recovery from developed spins, flat, accelerated and inverted

5.) Emergency procedures:

  • Recovery from unusual attitudes

  • Drills to include the use of parachutes (if worn) and aircraft abandonment

Flying Training

1.) Confidence manoeuvres and recoveries:

  • Slow flight and stalls

  • Steep turns

  • Side slips

  • Engine restart in-flight

  • Spins and recovery

  • Recovery from spiral dives

  • Recovery from unusual attitudes

2.) Aerobatic manoeuvres:

  • Chandelle (Wingover)

  • Rolls

  • Loops

  • Split-S

  • Half Cuban and Cuban 8

  • Roll off the top (Immelmann)

Progress beyond this course can be tailored to suit your goals and objectives. It is recommended to consolidate what you have learnt once you have achieved the rating, then return for tailored training.

He has a passion for vintage aviation, having previously flown and instructed on DeHavilland Tiger Moths, Boeing Stearmans and presently Spitfires for Spitfires.com.

Steve

Aerobatics Pilot

Steve’s aviation journey began with helicopters, where he first earned his wings (rotors!) and developed a passion for precision and control. Driven by the allure of fixed-wing flight, he soon expanded his expertise to include airplane certification, making him a versatile pilot across both rotary and fixed-wing aircraft.

Now a seasoned and qualified flight instructor, Steve thrives on introducing newcomers to the exhilarating world of aerobatics. Known for his approachable teaching style and skillful demonstrations, he guides students through their first loops and rolls with a perfect balance of excitement and safety. Whether in the helicopter cockpit or soaring through aerobatic maneuvers, Steve’s passion for flight is contagious and inspires those around him.

The Slingsby Firefly T67, an iconic British aircraft, embodies a rich heritage of aerobatic prowess and precision flight. Originally designed in the late 1970s as a robust, trainer-friendly aircraft, the T67 was developed to meet the rigorous demands of both civilian and military flight training. Built by Slingsby Aviation in Yorkshire, England, the Firefly quickly gained a reputation for its durability, agility, and responsive handling—qualities that made it an ideal choice for aerobatic training worldwide.

Constructed with a strong, lightweight composite airframe, the Firefly T67 boasts impressive maneuverability and stability, excelling in aerobatic environments where precision is paramount. Its powerful Lycoming engine enables the Firefly to execute complex aerobatic maneuvers with ease, from rolls and loops to high-G turns and spins, making it a favorite among aerobatic pilots and instructors alike.

The Firefly’s cockpit design prioritizes visibility and comfort, with a bubble canopy offering expansive views, perfect for both instructors and students exploring advanced maneuvers. The T67’s heritage includes a role as a training aircraft for the Royal Air Force and several other air forces, where it was used to introduce military pilots to aerobatic and tactical flight fundamentals.

Today, the Slingsby Firefly T67 continues to capture the hearts of aviation enthusiasts and professionals who appreciate its blend of history, engineering, and performance. It remains a testament to British aviation innovation and a timeless symbol of aerobatic excellence.
